Frequently Asked Questions

The following should answer a good amount of questions you may have about remodeling & contractors:

How long should a room addition take?
Survey's indicate that a room addition should take about 7-10 weeks.

Do I need any special permits from the city for a remodel?
Special permits are generally required if you are doing structural work or adding onto your property. This only applies within city limits. The best advice is to check your city's building codes and contact someone with the city. If you hire a general contractor, he or she can advise you on whether or not permits need to be obtained. If you know you need a permit do not try to circumvent it. Having your bathroom project shut down or not up to code can put you at risk for fines and even higher insurance premiums.

How much will it cost to remodel my kitchen or bathroom?
The price for a new kitchen or bathroom will be affected by (1) where you buy it (2) what features it includes and (3) the brands/models you select.

For kitchens, pricing can be from $5,000 or so (if you do some work yourself) to as much as $150,000 and higher. On average, a kitchen will cost from $15,000 - $26,000, which includes design, products and installation.Bathroom prices average between $6,500 and $11,600 when you're replacing everything. Again, the cost can be lower or considerably higher depending on what you're looking for.

What makes a kitchen more or less expensive?
Cabinets account for about half the total cost of the project and will have the greatest impact on your budget. They range in price considerably based on quality, the type of material they are made of, and whether they are stock (ready made in specific sizes) or custom (produced specifically for your kitchen in whatever sizes are needed). The material you choose for surfaces including counters, backsplashes and floors can also account for variations in price. Other key elements that factor in are talent and workmanship. In the remodeling business, you tend to get what you pay for. An accomplished designer, skilled sub-tradesmen and expert installation crew may cost more. But you'll appreciate their ability every time you use your kitchen.

What should I avoid in picking a contractor?
If a contractor is pushy and wants you to sign a contract the same day, this is something to avoid. Always make sure the contractor is licensed, valid, has references, and has insurance.

When building a deck or a porch, what should I consider?
Building a deck/porch is a great way to add value. Always pick the right contractor, one that has specific experience in building decks and porches. Make sure you also look into permits and make sure you call the utilities company to see what kind of lines are in the ground as well.
