Warning Signs: How To Avoid A Bad Contractor
In many ways,
a negative contracting experience can be avoided by
understanding the warning flags that come with
less-than-professional contractors. Here are six warning
signs to look for when looking for a contractor:
1. When A
Contractor Pushes You To Sign A Contract Same Day
If a contractor uses scare tactics such as a "today only
discount," or pushing you to sign a contract the same
day, avoid this type of contractor. It is always important
to pick a contractor you feel comfortable with. Check
references before you sign a contract.
2. A
Contractors Information Cannot Be Verified
Always stay away from a contractor whose name, phone
number, address, or other credentials
cannot be verified.
4. Licensing
Make sure your contractor's license is valid and up to
date.
5. Insurance
Each valid contractor will have General Liability
Insurance, Workman's Compensation Insurance, and Auto
Insurance. Be aware of the form in which the contractor
shows you his insurance certificate. Don't accept a
photocopy or fax document.
6. Full Amount
Up Front
Never pay for the entire job in advance or pay cash to a
salesperson. Your payment schedule should relate to the
total dollar amount of the job and the risks involved for
the contractor.
